2010 Western Victorian Wine Challenge Results
MEDIA RELEASE October 4th, 2010
A large crowd of wine lovers and many from the wine industry enjoyed another successful Western Victorian Wine Challenge at a gala dinner at the Ararat Performing Arts centre on Saturday 2nd October.
Master of ceremonies and ABC Ballarat morning presenter, Dominic Brine once again provided great entertainment to the large crowd in-between the more serious business of recognising the regions champion wines. Guest speaker Susanne Bell, from Bellwether wines in Coonawarra was especially excited about the regions Shiraz wines and also the emergence of less know varieties such as the Spanish stalwart Tempranillo.
The event bought about fierce competition between the Western Victorian regions with the Grampians and Henty regions taking the early points before a late surge from the Pyrenees in the red wine classes. Grampians Estate kicked off the trophy blitz with their 2006 Rutherford Sparkling Shiraz claiming the Best Sparkling Wine while Seppelts bagged a pair of trophies with their 2005 Drumborg Vineyard Riesling and 2007 Chardonnay respectively.
By the midway point Mt Langi Ghiran had also chipped in with their 2008 Bradach Pinot Noir being successful in the Pinot Noir class and the Pyrenees looked in serious trouble with no points in the regional battle. This changed dramatically going into the Shiraz and Other Red class when the 2008 Pyren E Block Pyrenees Shiraz won and the 2009 DogRock Degraves Road claimed the last class trophy.
In the consumer's prize section, they differed to the judges in the Sparkling class by selecting the 2005 Bests Concongella although agreed in the Riesling by also selecting the 2005 Drumborg Riesling. In the Chardonnay and other white class, they preferred the 2008 Wightwick Chardonnay from Ballarat and the same winery also enjoyed success from the consumer panel with their 2007 Wightwick Pinot Noir.
In the Shiraz class, the consumer panel selected the 2008 Seppelt St Peters Shiraz although this was decided by a single vote with 4 of the wines all locked on 5 points with one consumer to vote. Local wine lover Chris Fresle unknowingly had the casting vote and decided the St Peters was his kind of wine which tipped the balance. In the Other Red class, the much awarded 2008 Blue Pyrenees Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was the consumers first choice.
Going into the dojoDESIGN Judges Best Wine of Show and Grampians Event Hire Consumers Best Wine of show, the Grampians held a narrow 1 point lead over the Pyrenees. However, this was short lived when the 2008 Pyren E Block Pyrenees Shiraz was awarded the Judges Best wine soon followed by the consumers selecting the 2008 Blue Pyrenees Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the game was all over.
A jubilant Pyrenees Grapegrowers and Winemakers president, Dave Robson accepted the regional shield and gracefully acknowledged the participation of all winemakers from all regions in making the annual event such a resounding success. Wine challenge co-ordinator Allen Hart was especially happy with the increase in gold medals awarded compared to previous years, "the 2010 Wine Challenge has shown that competition between the regions is a very healthy way to help improve wine quality across the board" said Mr Hart.
All in all, a magnificent evening was had by all and credit must go to the many volunteers, caterers and members of Grampians Winemakers who made it all happen. Full results of winners are available on www.grampianswine.com.au
